The Real Reason Robert Pattinson Hated Making Twilight

Twihards may have dubbed Bella and Edward the couple of the century, but not everyone fell in love with their epic teen romance at first sight—including the actors. Sorry, fans, but it seems that Twilight's leading man wasn't completely thrilled with stepping into Edward Cullen's vampire shoes. It may be hard to believe, but we're listing all the reasons Robert Pattinson disliked the Twilight series.

He had a difference of opinion with the woman in charge

Pattinson was reportedly conflicted about his character's motivation. According to Buzzfeed, Stephanie Meyer, the author of the series, told New York Comic Con that he once argued with her for an hour on the subject. "He was very, very passionate about the character. Very intense," Meyer said. He considered Cullen "suicidally depressed." Well, the sparkly vampire is a bit emo, so it's not difficult to see where he got that idea. Meyer reportedly disagreed, and, well, you know how this story ends.

Instant fame made him nervous

Twihards are die-hards, but sometimes they forget that they don't actually know the actor behind the character in the books and movies. Some fans became obsessed with Pattinson. According to Germany's Interview Magazine (via Cafe Mom), Pattinson has experienced some "scary" and "creepy" interactions with fans."Suddenly everywhere I went people thought they already knew me. They look at a photo of me and think they have a special relationship, a friendship, an affair with me—someone they haven't met their whole life. That's crazy...but I try to laugh it off," he said.

Pattinson and Stewart's love wasn't perfect in real life

Relationships can be complicated enough without being showcased for the world to see. Pattinson's on-and-off-screen relationship with co-star Kristen Stewart is a prime example of how hard it is to prevent love from wilting in the spotlight. The couple's relationship was completely picked apart. These two leads were constantly in the gossip magazines throughout the release of the Twilight films and continued to dominate headlines well after the franchise finished. Unfortunately, the couple ended things soon after the movies wrapped.

The hearts of fans rooting for Pattinson and Stewart broke when news of Stewart's major misstep with Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders broke. As hard as it is to be under a microscope while filming, enduring a personal scandal couldn't have made things any easier for Pattinson. Two years after the incident, he reportedly joked about it to Esquire UK (via Us Weekly), saying, "S— happens, you know?" But he also went on to say that "the hardest part was talking about it afterwards. Because when you talk about other people, it affects them in ways you can't predict." Considering it took a while for Pattinson to discuss the betrayal, we suspect the incident was anything but a laughing matter to him.

The media changed his name

Along with gaining tons of fame from the Twilight franchise, Pattinson also acquired the nickname R-Patz, which he apparently abhors. In a 2012 interview with The Guardian, he said, "I don't understand who invented that thing 'R-Patz.' I want to strangle them." J.Lo and P. Diddy got to pick their aliases, but apparently Pattinson didn't get a vote.

Sometimes fans cross the line

At the time of this writing, Pattinson was engaged to musician FKA Twigs. While he has completely shut the door on his past relationship with Stewart, some fans decided they didn't want to let their dream couple go without a fight. Fans attacked the singer and her relationship with Pattinson on social media with racist comments. She tweeted, "I am genuinely shocked and disgusted at the amount of racism that has been infecting my account the past week." According to People, she admitted during a 2015 interview with Complex that she was affected by those hurtful words. "I wouldn't say I'm completely numb to it now, but there's definitely a numbness there."

The world won't let him move on from vampire life

It seems that Pattinson can't escape Cullen's shadow when it comes to his career. Whenever the actor is mentioned, you can bet that his name is attached to the phrase "former Twilight star." Yes, Twilight made him a household name, but Pattinson has tried to distance himself from the vampire heartthrob. He's made that clear by taking on roles in films such as Cosmopolis and The Rover. It doesn't seem like he's in a hurry to join any more Hollywood sagas just yet, though his name as been linked to an Indiana Jones remake. Pattinson admitted to The Daily Beast in 2014 that he's going to have to think long and hard before accepting another franchise role.
